A Juicy Idiom for Everyday Challenges

My lessons constantly push me to feed my students with fresh, juicy idioms. Today, for example, we were discussing the challenges leaders face in their work. One student remarked that managing a team is never boring - it requires quick thinking and adaptability in high-pressure situations. Others, having experienced similar challenges, nodded in agreement.

This moment prompted me to say, "Yes, exactly! You have to think on your feet."

As a tutor, I often find myself in situations where I need to do just that - responding to unexpected language questions, coming up with context-related examples on the spot, or figuring out extra practice when a tricky grammar point isn’t sinking in. To think on your feet is a widely used idiom among native English speakers, particularly in situations that demand quick decision-making, adaptability, and problem-solving under pressure.

Common situations to use this idiom:

  • Business and work - handling unexpected situations, such as answering tough questions in a meeting or making fast decisions during a crisis.

During the client presentation, we faced some unexpected objections, but I thought on my feet and handled them brilliantly."

  • Interviews - answering questions spontaneously without preparation.

No matter how prepared you are, you must be able to think on your feet because an interviewer will most probably surprise you with an unexpected question.

  • Emergency or crisis situations – reacting quickly and effectively.

The firefighter had to think on his feet when the building structure started collapsing.

  • Sports and competitions - when athletes or players need to make split-second decisions.

A great chess player must think on their feet when their opponent makes an unexpected move.

Whether you're leading a team, handling a tricky conversation, or improvising in a classroom, mastering the ability to think on your feet is an invaluable skill. Have you ever found yourself in a moment where you had to react quickly? Share your experiences in the comments!
